Holga Camera

Holga = a cheap plastic toy camera.  What’s so exciting about it?  It’s fun! More importantly, it’s the cheapest way into medium format photography, where the negative can be several times the size of standard 35mm or APS.  See what it’s about here.

Critter Corner

Do you know what a nudibranch is?  How about a Flamingo Tongue*?  No, it’s not a pink bird’s tongue!  Find out. Explore the Critter Corner.

*A reader replied: Erythromycin usually takes care of Flamingo Tongue (500mg bid X 7days). Perhaps we won’t invite him on our next dive trip. Here’s what a real Flamingo Tongue looks like:

Books

Books are the province of the armchair adventurer. Few of us get to explore the bottom of the oceans except through our imaginations. Check our recommendations.

Bountiful Harbor

On The Shelf: an article on underwater exploration in Statia harbor under Duncan Mathewson.  .

Pinhole Cameras

A pinhole camera is the simplest form of camera possible.  A pinhole camera is a light-tight box with a hole in one end and film inside. Modern photographers usually only think in terms of lenses and film formats, not realizing photography existed long before the daguerreotype and view cameras.  Check out our Pinhole Camera section.  You could build one easily.

This pinhole photograph is a portion (approx 6x12cm) of the original 6x16cm image of Clallum Bay on the southern shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, northwestern Washington State. No lens was used to take this picture!
(The JPG compression does not treat the delicate gray shading of the original very well)
